Today is Friday the 13th!
An article on the sexualization of boys. "The underlying message is that boys are being prepped for wanting sex all the time, and at younger and younger ages."
The image problem with primary care medicine. This is part of the reason why I decided not to go to med school. I'm looking forward to being a part of a primary care training environment where it is a field that is seen as positive and fulfilling. “There are a lot of students who want to change the world. Primary care is advocacy one patient at a time.”
A study revealed that a number of men admit to rape as long as it is not called "rape." Its still rape if its not something the other person wants to do.
The difficulty of saying "no" which can be more difficult in action than in theory.
Being weird is not an insult.

Is it really mid-november?

A blog about disability from someone with severe cerebral palsy who is unable to speak clearly but holds a bachelors degree in gender studies.
This short film features a woman who gets dumped, hooks up, gets pregnant, and has an abortion, in a very functional way (though the ending is a bit unrealistic).
An interesting article about men who are seeking an alternative to the misogynistic view of what masculinity is, but are coming across a difficulty defining what that alternative means. So many people focus on women's rights and staying away from "bad men" because of course all men are crappy but what about those who want to be clear that they do not identify with that gender role?
I love the whole concept behind this blog/documentary/etc. It is called "Where is your line" and encourages women (and men) to decide for themselves where the lines are for what they are comfortable with sexually and the need for some kind of discourse about when (if ever, and how those lines should be crossed. We live in a culture that in many ways encourages men to be sexually agressive and women to constantly guard their purity against "bad men" (see the article above). No one ever tells you how to have a conversation about all of these issues and its just sort of assumed that as long as you say no (and keep saying no) then you'll be all right.....I wish that things were different.

Oh, what a beautiful fall day
An attachment that can turn a cell phone into a microscope. It has may be able to be used in resource-poor countries, and is very awesome!
BPA isn't only in our waterbottles, but in our food too. Very not cool...I like cooking my own food for reasons such as this.
The children of gay parents are, surprisingly, just like the children of heterosexual parents. Whod've thunk it? They show no increased incidence of psychiatric disorders, are just as popular at school and have just as many friends."
High school administrations are having issues with kids who follow the dress code, just now for their assigned gender. Septa Strike Sucks
How not to make love like a porn star. Do we need to learn how to have good sex? Is porn setting up unrealistic expectations?
Mad men fans--some people did get married the day after JFK was shot.
This is fantastic--someone wrote their neighbors a note saying they didn't think it was appropriate that the girlfriend stayed overnight. And the couple got married and has it framed on their walls!
On a more serious note, here is an essay inspired by the book "Yes Means Yes: Visions of Female Sexual Empowerment and a World Without Rape." The blog itself is very interesting.

It's almost Halloween!
I just love how fun these costumes are! All of those feathers are precious!
Dear Elizabeth Hasselbeck. I do not approve of this as your birth control method with your husband: "So, it's not like I'm that disciplined, so right now, my strategy is dressing in a way that will not get me pregnant...nothing too revealing." How about saying "hey honey, lets use some birth control so we can have some sex, enjoy our attraction to each other, and not get pregnant, all at once!"
How to meet and woo a nerdy girl. Books. Lots of books. Though actually thats one of the only tips I agree with, personally.
Sally Draper's cocktail recipes. It creeps me out when she mixes drinks for her dad.
A soap opera taped in IKEA!
30 things every woman should have by the time she's 30. I'm about halfway there, and hoping to get to the rest in the next few years...though thanks to my accidental purchasing of 25 rolls of the wrong kind of toilet paper, I've got number four TOTALLY under control! I'm not as much of a fan of the follow up of 40 things to do before 40 (get divorced? have an affair? get diagnosed and survive?)...

That's just Weird
Health Care Company refuses to insure large baby. The 3 month old was apparently obese...seriously? (Update: They changed their mind.)
Bill Maher thinks the flu shot is bad for you. "He said he did not believe that healthy people were vulnerable to dying from the new H1N1 virus... About a third of the 76 children who have died of H1N1 since April have had no underlying health problems." Why do people listen to guys like that?
"Train drags half-naked mooner along tracks" Don't moon trains. Thanks.
"Fugitive busted after accepting friend request" People are stupid.

"Toys 'R' Us Scolded for Gender Discrimination" Dutch 6th graders protested a catalog spread that showed strongly defined gender roles. Best quote: "Classmate Moa Averin emphasized the importance of children being able to be who they want even if 'guys want to be princesses sometimes'." Children are more effected (and offended) by these stereotypes than you'd think.

"High Heels and Pumps Now, Foot Pain Later" nytimes claims that wearing high heels causes foot pain later in life. I thought this was obvious...why is this news?
"From Birth, Engage Your Child With Talk" Another "why is this news." Shockingly, you should talk to your children so that they develop proper communication and social skills. However with all of our cell phones and ipods, not to mention young parents, this isn't always as obvious as I'd hope.

"School's Toughest Test: Cooking" An interesting nytimes article about a New York City public school that has begun to cook for their students instead of bringing in pre-cooked (fried, mostly) meals. I think it's a great way to encourage kids to eat healthy foods, because if they aren't offered them, they won't eat them.
"Rare Source of Attack on 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell" An official military journal published an article claiming that there is scientific evidence that shows allowing openly gay people in the military will effect cohesion. Why has this not been repealed yet? It is far past time.
"Schrodinger's Rapist: a guy's guide to approaching a woman without being maced" An interesting article about the choices women have to make about every man they see, trying to decide if they are a potential threat or not. Very interesting.
"House Votes to Expand Hate Crimes Definition" The US House voted to expand the violent hate crimes definition to include those caused because of a person's sexual orientation. I didn't realize it hadn't happened yet, and can't understand why it is so long in coming. Quite disappointing that an Ohio representative was against the bill.
"Let Congress Go Without Insurance" It would never happen, but wouldn't it be great?
